Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance for the safe and timely reporting of weapons observed on campus in order to protect the safety of the University community and enable an effective response by Public Safety. This policy emphasizes situational awareness, accurate reporting, and adherence to instructions from authorized personnel.
Scope
This policy applies to all members of the Hofstra University community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors, across all campus locations. It governs the actions to be taken when a weapon is observed on campus, including reporting procedures, information to be provided to Public Safety, and compliance with directions issued by emergency responders or authorized University personnel.
Policy
Weapon on Campus
If you observe a weapon on campus, remain calm and contact Public Safety x36789 when it is safe to do so. Advise Public Safety of your exact location and description of the weapon. Provide all available information to Public Safety including your name, phone number, and a description of yourself and the person with the weapon, the type of weapon (if you know), and the number of weapons you have observed, as well as any other information that would be relevant. Follow all directions provided to you by authorized personnel.
