Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish expectations, procedures, and standards of conduct for participants in the Hofstra University Summer Orientation Program.

Scope

This policy applies to all participants and guests of the Hofstra University Summer Orientation Program, including students residing in University housing during the program. It governs all aspects of participation, including check-in and check-out procedures, use of residence halls and University property, conduct standards, safety requirements, and compliance with University rules and applicable laws.

Summer Orientation Guidelines 2023

CHECK-IN: At Check-In to the residence halls, all participants will be given a Summer Orientation name badge, a swipe card, keys to the room and suite, and a wristband. Name badge and wristbands are to be worn at all times. The wristbands are needed for admission to university housing, meals, and events.

KEYS/DOORS: If you lose your keys you should report it to your Orientation Leaders immediately. There is a fee of $70 for lost keys because the locks must be changed, regardless if one or both keys are lost. DOORS MAY NOT BE PROPPED OPEN.

LINENS: At the end of the program, YOU MUST bring any linen provided by the University down to the Check-Out desk.

LAPTOPS: At the end of the program, YOU MUST return any laptops, chargers, laptop bags or other accessories to the Check-Out desk. Please review the Loaner Laptop Agreement for details.

MEALS: You will eat meals together at the assigned dining facilities. Your swipe card will have a pre-loaded amount on it for meals on Thursday.

EMERGENCIES – PUBLIC SAFETY CAN BE REACHED AT 516-463-6789. We ask that you always notify an Orientation Leaders on your floor in addition to Public Safety.

RESIDENCE HALL CONDUCT: You are a guest of Hofstra University and the Summer Orientation Program. As such you are asked to check into your assigned room upon arrival. You are responsible for your assigned room and keys. Rooms are subject to daily checks for damage. Damage in the rooms will be billed to the guest who was assigned to the room. Do not remove window screens or transfer beds or furniture to another room, or you will be billed for the cost of returning the items to the proper room. In case of emergency, Orientation personnel will be looking for you in the room you were assigned.

I. PREAMBLE: All guests (that means you) associated with the Summer Orientation Program shall conduct themselves in a responsible manner at all times. Honesty and respect shall be the Code of Conduct of all individuals.

II. Hofstra University AND Summer Orientation Program REGULATIONS: In order to ensure an atmosphere of healthy interactions and to protect the property of university, the following regulations will be in effect during the entire period of the Summer Orientation Program. Violations of these standards may be grounds for immediate removal from the program:

A) Living Accommodations: All living accommodations at Hofstra University locations are being supervised by the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs. The office maintains their rights to have designated Hofstra University personnel enter and inspect any such room and items contained therein.

B) Vandalism and Damage: All persons residing in Hofstra University housing during the Orientation program shall be personally responsible for any negligent or intentional damage to Hofstra University property.

C) Alcohol: No one is permitted to possess or consume alcohol in any Hofstra University property, building or grounds during Orientation.

D) Smoking: Hofstra University is a smoke-free environment. There is no smoking or lighting of smoking-type products, including e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and hookahs, in any residence hall/room or facility on the Hofstra University campus. E) Pets: No pets are permitted in Hofstra University housing.

F) Quiet Hours: Orientation guests shall observe reasonable levels of quiet for sleep from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. At all times, consideration should be extended to all residents with respect to quiet.

G) Entrance to Halls: Only Orientation guests registered with the program are permitted in Hofstra University Housing. Admission to each hall is solely permitted by presentation of the Summer Orientation Program name badge, wristband, and swipe card.

H) Weapons: Guests of the Summer Orientation Program are prohibited from bringing weapons onto campus. Such an action is a violation of university rules and regulations, and New York State Law. No firearms, knives or other weapons are permitted on the grounds of any Hofstra University facility.

I) Safety Equipment: Firefighting, detection and alarm equipment are not to be tampered with except in case of a fire. No one should ever cover smoke detectors. Violators will be prosecuted.

J) Candles/pyrotechnics: No candles or firecrackers are allowed in Hofstra University housing.

K) Cooking Devices: Electrical cooking devices are prohibited in residence halls.

L) Parking: Parking is available; however, Orientation guests are not permitted to leave the campus during the program. Parking is prohibited in fire lanes, no-parking areas, loading zones, and handicapped parking areas. Violation of parking conditions may result in the issuance of violations, immobilization, and/or towing of vehicles at the owner’s expense and any vehicular damage resulting from towing is also at owner’s expense.

M) Drugs: No one is permitted to possess, use, distribute, sell or knowingly be in the presence of illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia (i.e. hookah, bong, rolling papers, etc.) on Hofstra University property, in building or on grounds during Orientation.

N) Other Rules and Regulations: Hofstra University may impose other rules and regulations for the conduct of guests in the Summer Orientation Program occupying Hofstra University housing.

O) Civil and Criminal Laws: Acts that are also violations of the general civil and criminal laws are prohibited. These include, but are not limited to, gambling, theft, possession of alcohol, the possession of marijuana, the possession, sale or use of narcotics or other dangerous or illegal substances, disorderly conduct, and assault and infringement of the rights of others.

P) All Orientation guests are required to always remain with the program and are not permitted off campus for any reason.

III. VIOLATIONS AND APPEALS: Designated Hofstra University staff members and Summer Orientation Program representatives may recommend appropriate disciplinary action for individuals in violation of the foregoing rules and regulations. Upon such recommendations, any of the above personnel may act immediately to exclude and remove any guest from the Hofstra University Campus and from the Summer Orientation Program.

Appeals must be in writing and must be filed with the Director of Orientation and the Director of Community Standards.

All Orientation guests are automatically suspended from the program pending a decision by the Director of Orientation and Director of Community Standards.

NOTE: All Summer Orientation Program keys are the property of Hofstra University. Orientation guests unwilling to abide by this code of conduct risk removal from the Hofstra University Campus and the Summer Orientation Program. Such guests must surrender their keys and wristbands and may be sent home from the program immediately.
